Publishing activity in the Museum has a long history. It has been actively conducted almost from its very foundation and served, first of all, the purposes of propaganda, since the Museum of the Revolution performed functions of a scientific and methodological center for the historical and revolutionary museums of the country. In the 1950s, the popular science essay "The Museum of the Revolution" by the writer P. Berezov and several collections of memoirs were published, and from the mid-1960s onwards, publishing work has become regular. Special editions were being published, popularizing the Museum's collections, guides to the exposition halls and exhibitions. In 1968, the publication of the annual intermuseum collection "Museology in the USSR" began, the materials of which were of a scientific and methodological nature. Since 1972, the "Proceedings of the Central Museum of the Revolution of the USSR" have been published regularly. At the same time, catalogs of museum collections were being actively created. The publishing activity of the Museum was closely connected with the activities of the Museology laboratory and the Methodological department in its composition (1978-2015). In the mid-1980s, the work on the study of the history of the national museology was expressed in the publication of the informational catalog "General and Local History Museums of the USSR" (1988). At the same time, the Laboratory of Museology together with the Research Institute of Culture were working on the creation of a terminological dictionary, which was published in 1986 ("Museum Terms"). A number of methodological manuals on museology have been issued, collections of materials of scientific historical and museological conferences have been regularly published.
Currently, the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia remains to publish catalogs of its collections, including theme-based photo albums and exhibition catalogs. The publication of materials of scientific conferences organized annually in the Museum (December scientific readings) continues. The Museum's printing house is supplied with contemporary equipment that empowers it to perform publishing work on external orders.
